Shanice Peterson, LCSW
Therapist
Hi there! I’m Shanice Peterson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and I look forward to working with you and supporting you on your healing journey. I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology from Spelman College and my Master’s degree in social work from New York University. My clinical experience includes school and various clinic settings to support the mental and emotional needs of children, adults, couples, and families - especially within active-duty service member & dependent communities. I specialize in working with those navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, stress, grief/loss, identity, women’s issues and relationship issues.
COLLABORATIVE
I view our work together as a partnership where we work together to set goals and find solutions, rather than approaching therapy from a perspective that I, as the therapist, am the sole expert in the room. You know you best! I aim to model and emphasize a trusting therapeutic relationship, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to empower you in your own healing process. Together, we will build and execute treatment in a way that is tailored to your unique needs, goals, and perspectives.
HOLISTIC
During the healing process, I help individuals examine patterns in their behavior, explore connections to their past, identify emotional pain manifesting in their body, and unlearn thinking/behavior that no longer serves them. I believe in taking the approach to mental health treatment that considers you as a whole person - including your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being - not just the symptoms that are bothering you or the things that have happened to you. I aim to address the underlying causes of your presenting struggles, rather than just symptom management.
STRENGTHS-BASED
I strive to create a safe space for individuals to feel empowered to become the best version of themselves. My goal is to ultimately create an opportunity for growth, change, overcoming and becoming to take place. I value focusing on identifying and building upon your existing strengths and capabilities to foster personal growth and resilience. Instead of solely focusing on stressors, symptoms, or ‘problems,’ I work in empowering you by helping you recognize your own internal resources and the skills you already possess to overcome challenges and create positive change.
How I Help:
Throughout my time in the mental health field, I have gained insight into the many challenges people face and how best to support them from a holistic, collaborative, and strengths-based approach. I operate largely from the belief that people in pain are not "broken," but are inherently full of strength and resilience. My goal is to meet you where you are, honor your goals, and provide support during the process.
More About Me:
I recently moved to the West Coast from the East Coast with my husband and our 2 year old son! When I’m not in the office - you can find me spending time with my family (both near and far, so thankful for FaceTime), out exploring and getting to know San Diego better, listening to music, and watching my favorite television shows!
