Dr. Mae Casanova
Supervising Psychologist & CLinical Consultant
Hi! I’m Dr. Mae and I’m a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY28763). My passion is in women and queer specific support, anxiety and mood disorders, complex PTSD, addiction, disordered eating and other trauma related issues such as perfectionism, codependency & attachment. I have experience supporting neurodivergent folks who are trying to fit into a world made for a neurotypical brain and struggling to find spaces that are aligned with their goals and values. I have worked in multiple levels of care (RTC/PHP/IOP/OP) and settings (college counseling, school based, non-profit) over the past 15 years; I’m humbled to have witnessed humans move through some of their toughest times.
Trauma & Somatics
I love working with folks willing to meet their exiled parts, who have been waiting a long time to be seen, heard and witnessed. I help them get comfortable in their soma and start listening to their body’s inner way of knowing. We have a tendency towards “intellectualizing” what happens to us, trying to make it make sense because “feeling” it can seem too scary. Honestly, sometimes our bodies don’t feel safe or trustworthy. AND we need to regulate the body before we can start processing any trauma or life altering events. My clients lead the pace and cadence to unburden parts of themselves; it’s my role to support their embodied experience. We work to move through any sensations safely and slowly vs. avoid them or pushing them down.
Intersectional Feminism
I believe social justice & social issues belong in the therapy space. We cannot deny the impact that harmful systems like capitalism, the patriarchy, racism, sexism, ablism & more are having on us. I am deeply attuned to the complexities of human behavior and the underlying factors that shape individual and collective experiences. I believe that neutrality is harmful and our current way of doing therapy does not address the historical, intergenerational, systemic and cultural influence on why we may be showing up the way we do. I identify as a queer member of the LGBTQI+ community (and have training & experience working within this community and providing gender affirming care). I have studied the phenomenon of gender and culture at the graduate level and bring a historical knowledge of women, trans & non-binary experiences into the room.
Supervision & Consultation
I work from a Liberatory lens providing clinical supervision, consultation and mentorship to new and seasoned clinicians. I help clinicians work to identify the harmful pressures, expectations and influence of Western psychologies and build a practice that feels more intrinsically attuned- blending theories with our own intuitive ways of knowing. I use this lens to address the multiplicities of the human experience- our relationship with control, our bodies, substances and each other- peeling back the layers and nuance.
How I Help:
With a foundation in radical self-compassion, I help folks connect with their tender and fierce parts while holding space for their messiness AND magic. I am not afraid to challenge clients and clinicians- exploring the sticky spots that may be hiding behind the unwanted thoughts, feelings and experiences. I lead with curiosity to create spaces that allow for a full human expression- no parts need to be hidden or silence.
More About Me:
I am a furry mom to a son who takes up a lot of my time and energy- in the best ways. I am a nerdy introvert who loves reading, exploring the dining scene with friends and finding the best places for live music with my partner. I am a North County San Diego native and spend lots of time with my family- I take my aunty duties very seriously.
